ABOUT US

A Park for Everyone in Berkeley

The origins of Ohlone Park are firmly rooted in the legacy of Berkeley's 1960's social justice movements.

It was just a strip of dirt when hundreds of protesters, fenced out of People's Park,

marched to Hearst and Grant and named this place "Peoples Park Annex".

Overnight, structures were erected, huge pots of soup simmered in giant kettles over campfires,

and childrens' play equipment was created out of whatever was on hand. Today the park encompasses  playgrounds for tots and school-aged children, playing fields, a native plant garden (with another on the way), a Community Garden, the nation's first official Dog Park and numerous redwoods and meadow areas for relaxing, exercising, and socializing.

HONORING THE ORIGINAL RESIDENTS

Our organization recognizes and works with members of the Ohlone Community; supporting them through educational events, and the annual California Indian Arts & Culture Festival in June.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Friends of Ohlone Park acts as an intermediary to help neighbors and user groups work together on Park projects with the City of Berkeley.

We host community meetings, publicize and share plans, and gather feedback for future improvements.

WORK PARTIES

Throughout the year, FOOP organizes a variety of work parties to support the maintenance of the park. In mid-March and October, UC Berkeley Students work alongside neighbors and FOOP members to cleanup and maintain the landscape. At other times, a small team of neighbors meet regularly to plant, water and weed the Native Plant garden at Sacramento, and other areas in the Park as needed.

UPCOMING EVENTS

There are no current events

We are sorry to report that the 6th Annual Native Ways Festival will NOT take place as previously scheduled for 6/21/25 in Ohlone Park due to the homeless encampment and concerns about safety. We are hopeful that the Festival can return in the future.

If you are concerned about the homeless encampment in Ohlone Park, we urge you to join Save Ohlone Park by sending an email to saveohlonepark@gmail.com
