A Park for All of Berkeley
The origins of Ohlone Park are firmly rooted in the social justice movements
of Berkeley in the late 1960's.
In 1968, a five block strip of dirt in the Center of Berkeley was created after the BART tunnel was dug. One year later, hundreds of protesters, fenced out of Peoples Park, marched across town to Hearst and Grant, establishing Peoples Park Annex.
There were already plans in place for the land to become a community college campus,
but an agreement was made and the City was able to purchase the land for a dollar, and begin the process of creating a new park.
